Today's slate.

The Big Hurst - Jeff Locke

skoormit - Jose Fernandez

La Osa Rosa - "Smiling" Ervin Santana

skoormit: Am I picking this Joe Jones guy too much? Maybe we should have a rule about recycling picks. Not a proposal--merely musing out loud. On paper. Electronically.
La Osa Rosa: I think it’s perfectly acceptable to pick the same pitchers over and over again. Look at me! I’m picking Ervin Santana again. He’s got me points in the past and I feel loyal to him. Plus, he has just about the sweetest smile in MLB. Pink Marliner signing off!
The Big Hurst: Girls have the strangest thoughts about naming sports teams.  I've had the same feelings about the recycling issue, but I don't think a rule is necessary.  I try to spread the love around, but sometimes the best pitchers are just the best pitchers.  I think that's to be expected.  And I'm often surprised at who we don't pick - Verlander, for example.  But there's definitely more glory in getting points from taking a lesser-known starter.  I still think my favorite point-getter so far is the "40 and fabulous" Bartolo Colon.

RESULTS

The Big Hurst: A new leader today (by a nose).  Order is restored.  The peasants rejoice.
skoormit: Yay.

Today's slate.

The Big Hurst - Madison Bumgarner

skoormit - Cliff Lee

La Osa Rosa - Hyun-jin Ryu

The Big Hurst: Just eight pitchers today?  I'll bet half of them find a way to get rained out.  Including Bumgarner in Los Angeles.
skoormit: Cliffy showed some life in his last start. Here's hoping he's in form again today.
La Osa Rosa: There’s so many choices today! I think I’m going to pick Hyun-jin Ryu, even though I don’t know how to say his name.
The Big Hurst: Today's game feels like musical chairs.  Whoever doesn't get points is going to feel like such a loser.
skoormit: How much worse can it get? I'm already losing to The Pink Marliners.

RESULTS

skoormit: Woooo! We're all geniuses!

Today's slate.

The Big Hurst - Matt Cain

skoormit - Adam Wainwright

La Osa Rosa - Chris Capuano

skoormit: The late bird finds a pretty good worm today.

RESULTS

The Big Hurst: Lots of interesting stuff on YCPB.  "The Marlins won three of four against the Giants."  Yes, they're seemingly only decent when I bet against them.  I'm sure if I picked a Marlin pitcher, he'd immediately get shellacked.  "The Blue Jays have won eleven in a row, matching the franchise record.  Despite 18 runs scoring, the game was played in 2:36."  I didn't watch this game, but how is this even physically possible in the modern age of baseball?  "The Pirates have the second-best record in all of MLB."  Yes, they do.  I have to say, it's kind of nice.  And just the other day, I complained about the Mets announcers on WFAN.  It's worth noting that YCPB called Mets announcers out on another play, but added the footnote that they're "usually wonderful."  I'm not so sure, and I'm not sure how announcers get graded.  I wonder if there's another fan - like me - that isn't team loyal and listens to lots of different broadcasts and could offer an educated, neutral opinion about which announcers are good and bad?  Maybe I should make public notes about which announcers I like (e.g. KLAC, KNBR) and which ones I avoid (e.g. WCBS, WLW, XPRS) and the reasons why.

June 22nd, 2013

Today's slate.

The Big Hurst - Barry Zito

skoormit - No pick

La Osa Rosa - Francisco Liriano

The Big Hurst: Really?  Yes, really.  I think.  He may have the highest salary of anyone pitching today.  And everybody knows that major league baseball teams spend their money rationally.  They must know what they're doing.
La Osa Rosa: I was going to pick Jose Quintana, but he didn't give me a good vibe.

RESULTS

The Big Hurst: Zito, off by one point.  Generally very well done.

June 21st, 2013

Today's slate.

The Big Hurst - Hisashi Iwakuma

skoormit - Tim Lincecum

La Osa Rosa - Bartolo Colon

The Big Hurst: I have to, right?
La Osa Rosa: I’m going to pick Bartolo Colon because he’s big, fat, forty, and fabulous! Also, I want to root against the Beachfront Marlins.
The Big Hurst: Even if he's not playing against the Beachfront Marlins? Still, beware the tides of Marlins.
La Osa Rosa: Oh man, I got confused between the Marlins and the Mariners…
skoormit: I'm losing to you?
The Big Hurst: No kidding.  Another Lincecum sighting!!!
La Osa Rosa: Come on, those two names are very similar!!
The Big Hurst: "Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, he is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money." -John Updike
